Have a quit smoking plan

For some smokers developing a quit smoking plan can help them achieve their quitting goal. Developing a quit plan is about identifying what works for you and taking it step by step.

Make your own quit smoking plan with our template

When developing your quit smoking plan, you can start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • Will I use quit smoking products for this quit attempt?
  • Should I seek professional support to quit smoking?
  • How can I change my smoking routines?
  • How can I reward myself during my quit smoking journey?

Setting a Quit Date

Committing to a quit date is not essential and some smokers choose to spontaneously give up their habit, while other smokers need to have a clear quit plan with a definite quit date.

When you are setting a quit date, you should consider setting it within the next two weeks to give yourself time to get organised while staying motivated to quit.

You should commit yourself to this date. If for some reason you do have to change it, set another one immediately.

Tell Family and Friends You Plan to Quit

It can help to tell your family and friends about your plan to quit smoking and gain their support. If you live with a smoker discuss your plan with them too.

Practice quitting

In the lead up to your quit date, why not try practicing to quit? Way to do this include:

  • Not smoking when you normally would e.g. before breakfast, during work breaks or with your coffee
  • Try some new coping strategies to help you deal with stress
  • Make your car and home smoke free
  • Separate smoking from pleasure activities
  • Refuse cigarette offers from other smokers
