Help Staff to Quit
Many staff who smoke will be interested in quitting or cutting down and may welcome support from their employer to do so. Organisations that take active steps to address tobacco and provide support to staff to quit may like to use this in their promotion and recruitment.
To account for differences between smokers, your organisation may like to provide a variety of support services that staff can choose to access. To ensure appropriate support is made available, staff should be consulted on the choice of method(s) made available to them. They may include:
- Contact Cancer Council WA to enquire about quit smoking courses and training for your staff.
- Providing staff with individual counselling services to help them along their quitting journey.
- Promoting Nicotine Replacement Therapies. Your service may choose to fully or partially subsidise products for staff and clients.
- Calling the Quitline on 13 7848.
- Providing a Quit pack - a free booklet containing information on how to stop smoking or cut down, call the Quitline to obtain these.
- Encouraging staff to visit the Make Smoking History website for tips on quitting.
- Downloading apps and programs such as MyQuit Buddy, or QuitCoach.
You may wish to develop resources which outline what support your service will provide to staff and a confidential process for staff to access these.
From Cancer Council WA’s experience, support that is offered within work hours is more likely to be accessed by staff.
Regardless of a staff member’s smoking status, they are still able to provide clients with support and information to help them quit smoking. For more information see "What if I smoke?".
