What is Quitline?
Quitline is a confidential, non-judgemental telephone support and information service that helps people who want to quit or reduce their tobacco use. Quitline also provides support to people who are helping other people to quit and can be a good source of information for staff working in health and community services.
Who will answer the phone when I call?
Quitline is staffed by trained counsellors who are skilled in the use of motivational interviewing. Quitline counsellors will work with each caller to tailor a plan and develop strategies to help them quit smoking and stay stopped. Quitline also has Aboriginal counsellors trained in narrative therapy.
How much will it cost?
You can call Quitline for the cost of a local call (higher for mobiles). Callers can phone Quitline as many times as required throughout their quit journey. To reduce the cost, callers can request Quitline's call-back service for free.
What does Quitline's call-back service involve?
Quitline's call-back service means a Quitline counsellor will call you at a time requested by you. It is an ongoing service where each call will be used to check in, offer advice and emotional support. This service is available for as long as you need it.
There are multiple ways to receive regular phone calls from Quitline:
- Phone Quitline directly on 13 7848 (13 QUIT)
- Request a call-back
- Message Quitline via their website
- Be referred by health or community service staff. Referrals to Quitline can be made by completing the online form or calling 13 7848. All referrals must have the permission of the person being referred. When referring someone else you will need to ensure that the person has a phone number that they can be reached on.
When can I call?

Saturday: 12.30pm – 3.30 pm

The Quitline office is in South Australia. Therefore, opening and closing times will be one hour earlier during daylight savings time.
Culturally appropriate
Quitline can arrange an Aboriginal counsellor upon requet. Quitline staff are trained in narrative therapy. Learn more about the narrative therapy approach to quitting smoking and the support that can be provided through Quitline in the below video.
The Quitline Aboriginal Liaison Team (QALT) works to enhance Quitline services to better meet the needs of Aboriginal people. As part of this role they travel throughout Western Australia to raise awareness of Quitline among Aboriginal people, and develop the skills of health professionals to utilise available resources and refer their Aboriginal clients to Quitline.
Interpretive services
If a Quitline counsellor does not speak the language of a caller, a confidential translating service will be used to provide ongoing support. Translation services can be requested in the initial phone prompts or may be identified as a requirement when talking to the counsellor.
Quitline and Prison
